SUBCULTURES OF JAPAN
Gothic Lolita
ゴスロリ、ゴシックロリィタ
About:
-
Gothic Lolita is simply put; the perfect blend of Goth Fashion and Lolita fashion. Gothic Lolita is more famous than Lolita itself, and it is often mistaken as the whole Lolita subculture, but Gothic Lolita is a part of Lolita.
-
The subculture also have roots in Visual Kei bands and their fans.

The characteristic of Gothic Lolita is 'not too sweet(lolita spectrum), not too spicy(goth spectrum)'. Clothes-wise, many goth-loli wears black or dark colored dress. They usually have dark and menacing make-up too.
The word Gothic-Lolita is often mistaken by a lot of people to refer to the whole Lolita fashion; but in fact Gothic Lolita is a part of Lolita. It is only darker, and blacker.
In the early 1990s, as Lolita fashion began to be recognized by the public, so does Gothic-Lolita. It is also from around this time that “visual kei” rock bands started becoming popular, with the debut of world-famous band X JAPAN. "Visual kei" bands are known for wearing gaudy and extravagant costumes and their goth makeup. It can be said that the root of the current Gothic Lolita fashion are the fans of X JAPAN that imitated the band's costume.
Gothic Lolita remains one of the most famous Japanese subculture ever. Sadly, nowadays Gothic Lolita had mostly disappeared from the Harajuku street fashion scene.
