• If you go Yoyogi Park on Sundays, chances are that you're going to meet the Rockabilly dancers, led by the Tokyo Rockabilly Club.

 

• Tokyo Rockabilly club devoted themselves dressing and dancing like it's the 50's. For men, most times they have extravagant Pompadours and leather jackets; while the ladies have natural-waist full skirt or dress with 50's hairstyle and makeup.

History:

Even though the Rock and Roll as a music genre already have a mass following in Japan since the late 50's, the birth of Rollers tribe (ローラー族) as a fashion movement and subculture was actually credited to the Harajuku Hokoten (Pedestrian Paradise/Car Free Zone) between 1977 and 1996. Many young people gathered there on weekends, dancing and dressing colorfully. The Bamboo Shoot Tribe (Takenokozoku), as well as the Rollers tribe were some famous dance group of the time.

Even though the Hokoten was abolished in 1996, the Rollers tribe kept dancing and dressing the same way. Tokyo Rockabilly Club was found at 1990s and they are still continuing their activities even now. You can find them dancing so skillfully to Rock and Roll songs in Yoyogi Park at Sundays.
